Preserving New Jersey’s railroad history is the mission of the Whippany Railway Museum. Get up close to a steam locomotive, the machine which helped make possible America’s industrial expansion. See a restored caboose, which served as the conductor’s offce on freight trains. Tour the Museum’s recently completed major restoration project, the Lackawanna Subscription Car #2454, and view the progress on our new restoration project, the Central Railroad of New Jersey Coach #1001.

The Museum’s outdoor collection also includes signals, warning devices and replicas of railroad buildings. You can also see the water tank, used to fill the tenders of steam locomotives and believed to be the last one in New Jersey still standing at its original location.

Our green and red Museum building, housed in the historic 1904 freight house, has displays of railroad artifacts and memorabilia as well as a large, operating O-Gauge model railroad layout.

The Museum is located behind the stone depot at 1 Railroad Plaza at the intersection of Route 10 West and Whippany Road in Whippany, New Jersey. It is just a short distance from Routes 24, 80, 280 and 287.

Topics of discussion are established annually by the New Jersey Historical Commission (NJHC).
