The United Railroad Historical Society of NJ is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, restoring, and operating historic locomotives and railroad cars. Through its extensive collection, URHS works to educate the public about the profound impact of rail transportation in New Jersey, the birthplace of the American railroad industry.

URHS is headquartered at Boonton Yard, a historic former freight facility of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, which is today part of NJ Transit. This site serves as the central hub for restoration and storage of the URHS collection, housing more than 60 pieces of historic equipment. The collection includes several operable diesel locomotives, two iconic Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 electric locomotives, the Hickory Creek lounge car from the world-famous 20th Century Limited, three coaches from the Jersey Central’s Blue Comet, four cabooses, and over a dozen passenger cars, among other rare and significant artifacts.

Boonton Yard is home to URHS’s restoration shop, where dedicated volunteers work to return this equipment to its former glory. Several restored passenger cars are actively used in public excursions, including the Hudson River Rail Excursions and The Finger Lakes Rail Experience, but are headquartered and maintained in Boonton.

Although the yard is not open to the public outside of special events due to its status as an active work site, URHS is working toward a bold long-term vision: the creation of a permanent transportation museum in New Jersey. This future museum will offer immersive, educational experiences to the public year-round and serve as a permanent home for this irreplaceable collection of American transportation history.
